What is my Life Certificate?

Once a year, the GEPF sends each pensioner a Life Certificate for them to complete and return to us. This Life Certificate is proof of your existence and confirms that the GEPF should continue paying your monthly pension.

The Life Certificate process is very important because it helps the Fund make sure that pensions are paid out correctly. Pensions must only be paid to living people and so, if a pensioner dies, the GEPF must stop paying that person’s pension. The problem is that there is sometimes a delay in reporting deaths to us, resulting in pension overpayments that are difficult to recover. The Life Certificate solves this problem by allowing the Fund to keep track of deaths among pensioners, preventing incorrect pension payments.

The GEPF requests that all pensioners complete and return their Life Certificates as soon as possible after receiving them. Please do not wait until the last minute to send back your Life Certificate because late arrival of a certificate could lead to your pension payments being temporarily stopped.

When sending in your Life Certificate, please remember to submit the original copy of the certificate, together with a certified copy of your green bar-coded identity document. Please note that the date stamp on the copy of your ID should not be older than six months.
